Dublin is an international capital city and is an economic engine of the region and state. Dublin City Council seeks to enhance the city’s attraction as a place in which to invest, to work, to live and to visit. The City Council takes a lead in shaping the strategic vision of the city and provides the essential services and the infrastructural capacity to sustain the life of the city.
Dublin City Council has several important roles in guiding, enhancing and protecting the built environment of the city. The council is the owner and developer of a significant stock of housing, civic and community buildings, it is the prime custodian of the city’s public realm and it co-ordinates and permits development by others.
Given the prominence of the housing challenge, the City Architects Division is within the Housing Department but provides architectural, urban design and conservation services across the Council as a whole. The Division provides strategic architectural advice in relation to the Council’s vision for the future of Dublin including to Planning, Parks, Economic Development. Community and Transport. The City Architects Division has particular expertise in the areas of housing design, sustainable building construction, urban design and architectural conservation and is an RIAI accredited Grade 1 conservation practice.
The City Architects Division provides a range of architectural services in relation to the various capital and revenue works programmes, including Feasibility Studies; Design services; Advice on planning, Health & Safety and Building Regulation requirements; Procurement; Construction contract administration; and advice on and supervision of maintenance and management.
An opportunity now exists in Dublin City Council for the position of City Architect.
A key part of the City Architect role is to support the design and delivery of the City Council’s built environment strategy and programme of capital projects. The City Architects Division is structured around teams that are focused on Housing, Civic Buildings, public spaces and dangerous buildings. Each team has a programme of work with several projects ranging in scale and complexity. These projects are delivered through various procurement strategies. Depending on the agreed delivery route, City Architects will either directly take on the role of project architect leading the design, or they will procure and manage external design and multi-disciplinary teams. A key priority across all programmes is sustainability and the need to make Dublin’s built environment carbon neutral and resilient to climate change. Working to the Assistant Chief Executive, the successful candidate will lead and direct the implementation of these programmes in association.
