The Executive Fire Prevention Officer ensures adequate fire safety in buildings and other structures and is governed primarily by the Fire Services Act, 1981 and the Building Control Acts 1990 to 2014. The Fire Services Act, 1981 places a duty of care on every person having control over certain premises, to take all reasonable measures to guard against the outbreak of fire on the premises, and to ensure as far as is reasonably practicable, the safety of persons on the premises in the event of fire. The Building Control Acts 1990 to 2014 provide a statutory basis for the Building Regulations.
The Executive Fire Prevention Officer is responsible for the administration and enforcement of the fire safety provisions of the Building Control Acts 1990 to 2014 Part B for most buildings except houses.
The Executive Fire Prevention Officer will report to the Chief Fire Officer, or such designated persons as may be assigned from time to time, the candidate will work as part of a team within the Westmeath Fire Service Department. They will also be required at times to work independently on their own initiative as circumstances demand.
