What is your career background?
I took part in the Local Government Graduate Program, under the Data Analytics/Data Metrics stream. My journey with Fingal County Council began in July 2021 when I assumed the role of Data Metrics Officer. While in that role, I was actively involved with both the Finance Department and the Property Services Department.
Prior to joining Fingal County Council I had worked as an Administrative Officer at The Rock Foundation but I made a decision to pursue a master’s degree in financial technology at Dublin Business School. The program afforded me the platform to hone my data analytical skills while also gaining valuable programming expertise.
What does your role involve?
My primary responsibilities included comprehensive rectification of the Fixed Asset Register and the management of the Property Interest Register. This involved a meticulous comparative analysis of both registers to pinpoint discrepancies, with the overarching goal of harmonizing them.
I played a central role in the implementation of a new Property Interest Register for Fingal County Council, collaborating closely with the developer and end-users during the onboarding process for the new system.
I also contributed significantly to the development of a comprehensive business case report, which assessed a range of financial and economic options pertaining to a substantial portfolio of zoned employment lands held by the Council in Stephenstown Balbriggan.
After completing 14 months with the LGMA Graduate program, I transitioned into a permanent position with Fingal County Council, as Assistant Staff Officer within the Property Acquisitions Department. In this capacity, I expanded upon my previous responsibilities within the Graduate program, while actively engaging in property asset acquisition on behalf of the Council.
I coordinate with various departments seeking property acquisitions, including with valuers, surveyors and solicitors to facilitate property procurement and subsequent registration under the Council's ownership. I also handle financial aspects for my team, such as overseeing tender processes, generating purchase orders and sales orders, as well as liaising with auditors on behalf of the Department.
What are the most rewarding things about working for a local authority?
One compelling aspect of working within a local authority is the unique opportunity to collaborate with specialists from various disciplines, all converging on a shared project. It is a rich environment for cross-disciplinary learning and growth. You get a sense of satisfaction and pride in witnessing the tangible impact of these projects as they take shape within the local community.
For example, I made a significant contribution to the acquisition of properties as part of the Swords Cultural Quarters development, aligning with the regeneration strategy for the Swords town center.
Local authorities offer the advantage of more reasonable working hours, which, in turn, contribute to an improved work-life balance when compared to certain other roles. Equally significant is the substantial investment made in staff training and development programs within Local Authorities.
Why should someone consider a career with a local authority?
The Local Government Graduate program offers a platform for connecting with talented and innovative minds from various academic backgrounds and across diverse regions and local authorities. It also offers comprehensive training and development opportunities and support.
For me, my role on the Local Government Graduate programme gave me the opportunity to introduce creative solutions to both existing and emerging challenges within the local authority.
