What’s your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part working as a graduate planner in Fingal County Council is working on local projects that have a tangible impact on communities like masterplans, local area plans and framework plans. Improving the public realm and enhancing services for the local area is very fulfilling work. Knowing that I am helping to bring about real-world improvements to people’s lives gives me great job satisfaction.

What’s the most exciting project you’ve worked on so far?

Working on framework plans has been the most interesting part of my job. Framework plans enhance areas to make them better places to live. A framework plan asks people how they would like to shape their communities and find out if their opinions align with the council’s proposals. When they’re implemented, framework plans can breathe fresh life into communities.

How does it feel knowing your work directly impacts communities?

It is a great feeling knowing your work has a tangible impact on the community you live in. There's a strong sense of purpose and work satisfaction when working in the local authority planning sector.

How do planners help create more sustainable communities?

As for how planners contribute to more sustainable communities, it's a multifaceted approach. Planners propose changes, projects, and schemes informed by best practices not just in Ireland, but across Europe and worldwide. We engage with various internal departments, local communities, and public and private sector stakeholders to ensure these proposals are well-rounded and effective. After consultations, we proactively monitor the implementation of these proposals to ensure they are making the desired impact.

I find that honing communication skills, project management abilities, engagement techniques, and technical training are key for driving sustainable development effectively. Working as a planner really means being at the heart of community transformation and it's incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in your city or county council planning?

If you’re interested in a career in local government planning, I’d recommend engaging with your local council – go to public consultations, read planning-related news, and look at planning case files on their website. Broader awareness of planning issues is an essential part of the job.
