What is your career background? 

I studied Architectural Technology in LIT and got a summer student contract in Clare County Council in 1998. When I finished my studies, I worked as a Grade 2 Architectural Technician for five years in Limerick Corporation and then earned a promotion to Grade 1 Technician with Limerick County Council where I have been ever since, bar a three-year secondment to Clare County Council along the way. I was lucky to be promoted three times to my current position while working for the amalgamated Limerick City and County Council.

What does your role involve? 

In Limerick, I am based in Property and Community Services looking after the commercial property landbank for the council. Day-to-day it’s query-based, a lot of acquisitions, disposals queries about council land, managing of licenses and leases. We confirm ownership and provide boundary mapping information. Limerick City and County Council is currently implementing a bespoke Property Interest Register software system which will benefit the entire organisation in being able to track all commercial buildings and land in our ownership.

What are the most rewarding things about working for a local authority?

I love my work and I like helping people and providing a public service. For example, I have been involved in projects to refurbish purchased housing stock to make it available for allocation to the Council housing waiting list.

Why should someone consider a career with a local authority?

The work is very varied and there is a great sense of giving back and that what you do matters.  

There is also a culture of opportunity and encouragement to move between different departments. As a Chief Technician I advise people continuously to try different avenues, take the training and education available and become a more rounded Technician in the process. This benefits all parties.
