When applications are in and after the closing date the hiring authority will screen all applications to make sure they meet the eligibility criteria.

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will be progressed to the next stage of the selection process. These eligibility criteria are sometimes referred to as ' the quals'.

At this stage, the local authority may request verification of qualifications. This can extend the recruitment process but ensures that only eligible applicants go forward to shortlisting or interview.

Where a number of eligible applications are received, the applications may be shortlisted for interview based on the criteria for the job outlined in the candidate information booklet. This process may involve additional assessment, tests or preliminary interviews.  Applicants will be notified of these additional stages if applicable. Only those shortlisted will be called for interview.
