Job Summary

Job requirements

Candidates must be aged not less than 18 years on Friday, 25th April 2025. The current normal  retirement age for firefighters is 55 years, subject to medical.

Applicants shall possess adequate literacy and numeracy skills to allow them to carry out their duties in a competent and safe manner (applicants will be required to undertake a literacy and numeracy skills test as part of the selection process).

An appropriate level of physical fitness is a key element in ensuring firefighter effectiveness and in protecting their health and safety (applicants will be required to undertake physical fitness tests as part of the selection process).

Applicants must hold a current valid Category B full Driving licence, Possession of a Class C Driving Licence would be an advantage.

It is part of the terms of engagement for retained firefighters that persons appointed shall:
 

  • Work and reside within 3.0 km of the Fire Station ( i.e.  Ballyjamesduff, Killeshandra or Kingscourt)  in which they are employed to enable them to function effectively. Other locations in excess of the 3.0 km limit  up to an absolute maximum of 5.0 Km from the Fire Station may be considered if the travel times (based on GPS navigation planner e.g. Google maps or similar as determined by Cavan County Council) does not exceed 6 minutes and the Council are satisfied that it does not adversely affect turn out times at the Fire Station. The routes are measured from your place of employment and from your  primary residence (home) to the Fire Station.
  • Be required to be on call for a minimum of 24 weeks per annum, on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week.
  • Be reasonably available to attend essential scheduled Fire Service training during periods outside the minimum 24 weeks on-call duty roster. 



Remuneration of Retained Firefighter

 

Annual Retainer Fee: (0 – 1 years) €14,523; (2 – 4 years) €15,515; (5 – 7 years) €16,739; (8+ years) €17,854

A firefighter would typically be required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours of training including drill nights at their local fire station and ongoing training courses during each year of employment

Community Fire Safety payment: €25.27 per hour
Community Fire Safety Annual Payment: €38.88 per fortnight
