Job Summary

Donegal County Council provides a diverse range of Local Government services across a large geographic area in County Donegal. These services include the provision of physical and social infrastructure, housing, economic development and enterprise support, tourism development, community and cultural development, recreation and amenity services, emergency services and the enforcement of the planning and environmental regulatory framework.

Donegal is spatially unique, having the longest coastline in the State, sharing 93% of its land boundary with Northern Ireland and only 7% with the Republic of Ireland. As such Donegal’s natural functional area transcends its land boundary with Northern Ireland with substantial movement and interactions of citizens, goods and activities taking place across the region.

Donegal County Councils operating revenue budget for the year ending December 2025 of €200 million.

An opportunity now exists in Donegal County Council for the position of Chief Fire Officer.

The Chief Fire Officer is a management within the Local Authority and the successful candidate will work under the direction and control of the Director of Services or other employee as designated by the Chief Executive.

The Chief Fire Officer will be expected to prepare budgetary estimates for their area of operation and to work within allocated finances to the best overall effect. They must have the ability to work across section teams and interact with other area/teams and with Chief Fire Officers in adjacent local authority areas. The post holder will also be required to have contact with property owners/organisations, Government Departments, the public, media, courts, etc. as required, as well as interaction with elected members and liaising with staff/union representatives.

The duties and responsibilities attached to the post of Chief Fire Officer may vary from time to time, without changing the general character of the duties or level of responsibility.

The Chief Fire Officer may be required to perform duties appropriate to the post and grade, other than those detailed above and to take instructions from and report to a Director of Services or other employee as designated by the Chief Executive.
