Job Summary

The Dog Warden shall give priority at all times to the welfare of the dogs in their care and so a satisfactory knowledge and/or experience in animal husbandry is essential.

The successful candidate will require excellent customer service skills as engagement with the public will be a feature of the position.

The successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication and report writing skills and will be required to be a witness on behalf of Offaly County Council in courts of competent jurisdiction.

The position of Dog Warden will require flexibility and will include a mix of administration and manual duties.

The successful candidate will require the ability to work across different sections of Offaly County Council and develop close cooperation with local stakeholders and;

  1. such other local authorities or bodies for which the Chief Executive, for the purposes of the City and County Management Acts, is Chief Executive; and
  2. to any other local authority or body with which an agreement has been made by the local authority or by any of the authorities or bodies mentioned in sub-paragraph (a) of this paragraph,
under the direction and supervision of the appropriate Director of Services or any other officer designated by him/her, such services as may be required by any local authority or body herein before mentioned in the exercise and performance of any of its powers, functions and duties. The holder of the post will perform duties as may be assigned from time to time, on a county-wide remit, to ensure the Offaly County Council complies with all statutory obligations and regulations.

They shall work in close liaison with An Garda Siochana, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, other local authorities, and registered animal welfare charities, and shall direct and co-operate with such organisation(s).  For the above reasons, but not limited to the above, they shall take all reasonable steps to ensure flexibility and that they can be contacted by the above, when required, through agreed protocols and procedures.

The Dog Warden will receive, and investigate fully, complaints relating to breaches of various legislation and bye-laws that are applicable to the role.  The Dog Warden will produce verbal and written reports on their investigations.  All evidence will be treated in the strictest confidence.

The warden will arrange, issue, and serve any necessary statutory notices. Where a particular course of action is determined the warden will be expected to follow that course of action to completion.

The Dog Warden will make contemporaneous notes on their investigations.  The Dog Warden will be required to deliver evidence in a relevant court as required.
