Job Summary

The Local Government sector in Ireland is made up of 31 Local Authorities and 3 Regional Assemblies. Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to citizens. They have responsibility for the delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making cities, towns and the countryside areas attractive places to live, work and invest. These services generally include housing; transportation; planning; infrastructure; environmental protection; recreation and amenity provision and community development. Local Authorities also play a key role in supporting economic development and enterprise promotion at local level.

Sligo County Council has responsibility for the delivery of a wide range of public services in the area with a focus on making the County, our towns and countryside attractive places to live, work and invest. The Council provides a diverse range of services across a large geographic area. Key services areas include Planning, Local Enterprise Office, Community and Economic Development, Transportation, Motor Taxation, Environment, Water, Emergency Services along with Housing, Libraries and the Arts. These operations are supported by internal services which include ICT, Corporate, Finance and Human Resource functions.

An opportunity now exists in Sligo County Council for the position of Senior Executive Scientist.

The successful applicant will report to the Senior Executive Officer or other officer designated by the Director of Service or the Chief Executive. The Senior Executive Scientist will be responsible for the overall management of a team of staff including scientists, environmental technicians and administrative staff. The Senior Executive Scientist will be responsible for the efficient management of their prescribed work area including water quality protection, catchment management, rural water, air and noise pollution, waste and litter enforcement, landfill aftercare and recycling facilities. Managers at this level work within defined parameters relevant to the position, in accordance with the Local Authority's vision and objectives.

This is a key management role with responsibility for the delivery of statutory and corporate environmental water monitoring programs, including meeting the requirements of service level agreements with a range of external agencies. The Senior Executive Scientist will play a key role in developing and implementing change programmes to meet the evolving challenges of national, regional and stakeholder strategies. ln the current economic climate, managers are charged with service delivery and change management in an environment of limited resource availability, both human and financial. Delivery of efficient services and value for money is crucial.
