Job Summary

Mayo County Council is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons for the position of -  Project Manager - Lough Carra LIFE Project.

The Project Manager LIFE Lough Carra Project will have responsibility for managing and coordinating the EU LIFE project Life Lough Carra and will lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of up to six people.  The Project Manager will be responsible for fostering productive relationships with all stakeholders, landowners, State bodies, local authorities, local communities, EU Commission External Moderator and the Lough Carra Catchment Association.

Mayo County Council was recently awarded funding for a €4.9m EU LIFE Nature and Biodiversity Project ‘LIFE Lough Carra’. The LIFE Lough Carra project is scheduled for completion in October 2026 and the contract of employment will cease when the project ceases . The project will target improving ecosystem resilience & reducing nutrient pollution in Lough Carra, one of Europe’s premier SAC Marl lakes. The project is in the Lough Carra Catchment, Co. Mayo.

The role requires a high level of technical ability together with an understanding and knowledge of the science, legislation, policies and plans that underpin the Local Authority’s role in Environmental Management.

The role also requires a clear knowledge and understanding of local authority services and its key stakeholders and relationships, local government structures and its democratic role and mandate, current local government issues, future trends and strategic direction of the sector.
The role requires flexibility in terms of working hours as the duties may involve working outside of normal office hours, as required.
 

Each Candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:

  1. have achieved at a minimum Level 8 on the National Framework of Qualifications in zoology, biology, ecology, environmental science, agricultural science or a relevant equivalent qualification.  
  2. have a minimum of 3 years’ experience relevant to this post (including project and financial management experience)
  3. have a full clean driving licence and access to their own transport.
